Types of Coaching
Each life coach has an authentic way of working based on theoretical training and life experience. I am also on a journey of growth, as you are.
Here are some modalities that have shaped my style of work:
Consciousness Coaching
Developed by Marc Steinberg, Conscious Coaching is lean and elegant. With a directed approach, I can support you in fast tracking your vision, creating powerful goals and shifting your relationship to your life. I love this work because of its profound teaching. As your coach, I support you in developing a powerful relationship to your word and holding you to a high level of integrity.
Mindfulness Based Coaching
Developed by Jon Kabbat-Zin, this coaching method has its roots in ancient Buddhist practice because its focus is becoming present to the moment. Is it not true for all of us, that you can only live in the present moment? The problem is most of us are either living our lives based on past experience or rushing forward to some imaginary future.
Yet, if you stop and take a few moments to close your eyes and focus on your breath, you are immediately transformed into the present moment with all its tragedies and comedies. In this moment there can be a pause before choosing a different response, instead of the usual unconscious patterns of behaviour in which many people are engaged.
With this form of coaching you learn that nothing is good or bad, unless you choose to make it so and the only way to make a different choice is to be present with whatever is coming up for you.
Your thoughts create your reality. Mindfulness coaching teaches you to carefully choose your thoughts and question their truth and validity. I can help you cultivate awareness in each moment, because each moment is so precious.
Brief Solutions Focussed Therapy
Counselling and life coaching differ in one important respect. Whereas counseling focuses on past hurts and deep-seated traumas, life coaching looks at your current reality and how this can be transformed into a future that is compelling for the client.
The brief solution-focussed approach will help you find solutions rather than continually drawing you back to the problem. Developed by people like Steve de Shazer, his work highlighted that in the exceptions lie the clues to effective change. In other words, what are you doing in your life that is working and how can you do more of that in order to achieve better results.
This approach moves away from the philosophy of scarcity and fear, towards an approach of abundance and optimism. Instead of remaining passively involved in your helplessness, it moves you towards greater responsibility and change.
As the saying goes, "blessed are the cracked, for they let in the light."
Somatic Life Coaching
Somatic coaching has its basis in somatic psychology, and is an approach that considers the mind-body relationship. It essentially addresses the body's awareness and its movement patterns. Through observation and experimentation with your dominant body's movement patterns, I can help coach you into a different way of experiencing your reality.
There are many different techniques within somatic psychology, including The Moving Cycle Model developed by Christine Caldwell, PhD. Hers is a four-phase cycle in which we explore awareness of how you are moving, owning your feelings and actions, appreciating yourself unconditionally and then taking action and moving into inspired, and meaningful goals.
All this is done through experiencing the body's habitual movement patterns, and unlocking them to try a different response to moving in the world.
